Quality Solid &
Engineered Woods
Count on extensive durability with all West furniture since it
is made from the highest quality solid woods such as cherry, ash and
maple, and quality veneer panels for use with back Panels, Drawer
Bottoms and dust panels, mirror backing and curved panels.
Many furniture manufacturers use composite wood products or "engineered"
woods such as veneers. The term "solid wood" may be confusing to some
consumers, since both solid and veneered woods are of solid wood
construction. In fact, veneers are made from many pieces of plywood
material which remain after a tree is milled.
Our commitment to creating the quality furniture today that will become
the family heirlooms of tomorrow remains firm. To enhance a piece of
furniture or achieve the style and functionality desired such as in our
Louis Philippe Collection sleigh bed, veneer material is used. The
choice to selectively use veneer material rather than pressed hardboard
like many of our competitors not only ensures that each piece remains
sturdy and solid, but is also lighter to move for the customer in their
home.

Corner Brace Blocks
Glued and screwed in the corner of every case is a corner brace
block which helps prevent damage when shifting or moving the furniture,
and gives each piece extra strength and sturdiness. Without the use of
these blocks, furniture racking could occur and place undue stress on
other areas of the furniture.

Die Cast Hardware
All knobs, handles and decorative feet are custom-designed and
cast in brass for extra long life. In the die cast process molten metal
is poured into a mould. After cooling the part can be machined to add
screw threads and other features.
Lastly it is finished and polished. The advantage of die
casting is that it produces a strong component in beautiful shapes and
finishes.
The results produce a heavier, more durable hardware compared
to those which are merely punched out of sheet metal. Some of the
hardware is antiqued, and even the nickel hardware has a brass core.

Distressing Techniques
Distressing is an artistic and labour intensive
technique which is designed to make furniture look and feel like a
well-aged and weathered antique. In addition to giving a piece of
furniture body and character, it denotes quality- not unlike the
stone-washed look for denim, or the aged look of leather. It also
provides furniture makers with the opportunity to provide an antique
look with modern functions that were not available long ago, such as TV
entertainment units.
Some distressing techniques involve physically marking the wood by
sanding down or rasping sharp edges to make them rough. Other cosmetic
distressing techniques add effects to the finish to produce an aged
appearance include splattering, ragging, cow-tailing, and hand padding.

Other Signs of Quality
When determining the quality of the furniture, remember that it is
sometimes the smaller
qualities that will set some pieces apart from others. Some of those
qualities to look
